ACAPO FESTIVAL THIS WEEKEND – TEMPORARY DOGS OFF-LEASH AREA

For ACAPO this coming weekend, the Parks has agreed to make the ‘Bellwoods Park’ area of the park the official off leash zone - this Friday, Saturday and Sunday. This is the area bordered by Dundas, Shaw and Crawford - where the Farmers Market is located on Tuesdays - which is regularly on-leash. The market organizers ask dog owners to please be respectful to our market location and to pick up after your pets, as there are environment health concerns. Also please be mindful of the recently mulched areas under some trees.

There have been complaints about dogs running loose in the on-leash zones - particularly in the evening when people are commuting through the park. By-law enforcement officers will be called in if the situation continues.

Thank you for your cooperation. And please let the Friends Dog Committee know how this temporary alternative off-leash area has worked.

TRI-BELL WEEDING CREW - weedfest

The Tri-Bell weeding crew is coming out of hibernation this Sunday! Well, so far it's Patricia and I, but if you’re interested in joining us that would be great -- bring along your tools and a thermos of tea.

As usual, a note of caution -- this little initiative is for gardeners meaning it’s not a supervised event and if you don’t know your weeds from your perennials then it’s probably not for you. However, company is always nice!

We haven't decided yet which beds to start on but there's plenty to choose from – those around the Rec Centre, the beds by the main gates?

WHEN: Sunday, June 8, ‘08 at 10:30am
WHERE: Rec Centre (look for 2 bent over women in and around the building)
BRING: You’ll need your own supplies. Here’s a suggested list of things to bring along:

  • a gardening gloves (for yourself)
  • a gardening fork (to loosen dirt around plants so water soaks in)
    • a trowel or other preferred tool for weed digging (try to get roots of the darn weeds)
  • a paper bag for weeds, etc
  • a green garbage bag for litter, etc

Best – Michaelle and Patricia

Wednesday June 25th – 100 Mile Potluck Dinner. Your challenge, should you accept it is, to make a dish with ingredients, from Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market, and share it with your neighbours. It’s lots of fun and last year was a great success and the weather was beautiful. Great way to join your neighbours and eat healthy together. It will start at 6:30pm, located north of the gates in the circle. You’ll see the two green canopys. This event is sponsored by the Friends of Trinity Bellwoods Park and Olivia Chow. Please RSVP to Olivia’s office at 416.533.2710.

Tuesday August 12th from 4-5pm brings the ‘Jr. Eco Farmers Picnic’ workshop to the market. Bring a blanket and join us for a fun and informative exploration of ecological farming. Find out from 'HENrietta' and 'Jeanie the Zucchini' what makes for happy, healthy plants, animals, soil and water. Participants will get a chance to learn about what some of the farmers at the market are doing to protect the environment and raise healthy vegetables and animals. The Jr. Eco Farmers Picnic is a free workshop presented by Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market in partnership with Ecological Farmers Association of Ontario.

COLD FRAME WORKSHOP

Date: Tuesday, September 9th, 2008
Time: 3:30 pm – 5:00 pm
Location: Trinity Bellwoods Farmers Market
Cost: none

Kyla Dixon-Muir presents : Season Extension Techniques : Coldframes

Kyla Dixon-Muir, Development Coordinator at Riverdale Meadow Community Garden in Toronto, has been in the garden every single week – including right through the winter - for a number of years.

She grows foods in a wide range of low-cost and no-cost ColdFrames, some of which require construction skills, many of which do not. Kyla also applies Season Extension Techniques to get as much as a two-month head-start on growing foods for the warmer seasons.

This workshop will teach you how to create simple shelters: to extend the season for keeping some herbs, root vegetables and sub-tropical plants growing longer into the fall; to sow seeds now to harvest through until snowfall; to sow other seeds to eat right through the winter; and sow yet others to gain a head-start on spring planting.

Kyla has written a book on the subject, recently revised, and has also just produced a companion Planting Calendar and Diary. She is an experienced lecturer, and a inveterate recycler who can show you easy ways to keep your garden going months longer into the fall and right through the winter.

This Workshop will provide demonstration models of a range of low-cost and no-cost frames for sheltering plants, a handout, and hands-on practice at covering an easy ColdFrame.
