2010 Treasury Report

Gary Hanrahan, the greenhouse treasurer, reported that there is just over id="mce_marker",200 in the greenhouse bank account.  Gary estimates that we will spend $600 on soils, containers and other supplies to run the greenhouse this spring.  Other expenditures could include work on the ventilation system.

Winter Report

Gene and Melissa wintered a wide variety of plants in the greenhouse this winter.  Nonetheless, there were multiple break-ins.  We are working with the Councillor’s office to try to get the best advice about how to discourage break-ins from homeless people looking for a warm place to sleep.  The east door is severely damaged from the break-ins so I am in contact with Park Supervisor Brian Green about how to repair the east door.  Hopefully, this repair will be completed in the next several weeks, prior to the start of our Spring Watering program. In the past, we have not had a problem with break-ins in spring, when there are lots of people in and out of the space.

Keys

New keys will be available for pick-up at 182 Crawford Street in the silver mailbox on the front porch by Friday, March 2nd.  If you can afford to make a donation of $30, please leave a check in my mailbox, payable to the Trinity Bellwoods Greenhouse (see below for details).

Donations

For the recommended donation of $30, payable to the Trinity Bellwoods Greenhouse, tax deductible receipts are available from Gary Hanrahan, our Treasurer, at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. If $30 is not affordable for you, no problem, please participate anyways! The money we collect will be used to pay for soils, containers, tools and construction costs.

Construction & Repairs  - Gary and Bob offered to head up construction and repairs.  They welcome assistance from anyone else in the group! There will be a grease pencil board in the greenhouse listing small repair jobs that are on-going.  Please help out with these whenever you can! Immediate tasks include new plastic for the table, new door, new log book, grease pencil board and research into better vents.

Soils – Gene offered to supply the greenhouse with soil for spring use.  Kristen offered to help.

Spring Clean-up – Anna, Barbara, Helen Gene and Michelle all offered to help clean the greenhouse for spring users. There will be a first group clean-up on Sunday, March 4th, starting at 9:30 AM.  All are welcome!  If you can’t make it, please feel free to help clean up in the greenhouse whenever you can.

– Joe Clement, the new Greenhouse Gardener, will be looking for people to help him in the greenhouse garden this spring and summer.  Please contact Joe at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.>

Red/Green Watering System

This year, we will use a Red/Green tape identification system so it is easy for the Watering Committee to know which trays to water.

GREEN – for trays of plants that require checking and possibly watering.

RED - for trays that don’t require watering because they are being cared for by individuals

Volunteer Responsibilities

We really need your help to keep the greenhouse running smoothly!  REMEMBER THIS IS AN ALL VOLUNTEER GROUP so if we don’t care for the greenhouse, no one will!  Most importantly, PLEASE CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF!!!

Also, everyone should sign into the log book upon your arrival to record your activities, as well as any observations with temperature, pests, health of the plants, and soil supplies. If there are tasks listed on the grease pencil board and you have time, please help out!  ALSO, WE NEED EVERYONE TO CLEAN THEIR SEEDLING TRAYS AND CONTAINERS ONCE YOU FINISH WITH THEM.

REMEMBER NO FOOD OR TRASH IN THE GREENHOUSE as we have had problems with mice. There is a park trash can directly outside of the greenhouse.  Volunteers are to sweep up, wipe down the tables and lock the door when you leave.

Mentoring
