Greenhouse

Next Meeting
Our next Greenhouse Group meeting will be Tuesday, March 18th from 7:30-8:30 PM at the Trinity Recreation Centre. Thanks to all who gave input on our application to the city for permission to run the greenhouse as a community. .

Greenhouse Manager
Martin Rudd has volunteered to be our greenhouse manager. Thanks Martin! Martin can be contacted at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Opening
I think we can safely say that the greenhouse will be open by Thursday, March 20th, the first day of spring. Green Force TV is still working on a final hook-up of the electrical system to the solar panels on the roof of the Rec. Centre.

Hours of Operation
We plan to have the greenhouse open daily from 4-5 PM. If you would like to volunteer an hour or two in the greenhouse per month, please e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. The more people who volunteer, the more we can increase the hours of operation.

Equipment List
We need some equipment in the greenhouse. If you have extras of any of the following and would like to make a donation, please contact This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Utility Shelf
Compost Bins
Compost Bucket
Watering Cans
Chalk Board or Grease Pencil Board for Messages
Clip Board with Contact Information
Hydrating mats
Sturdy (lockable) storage bin for gardening equipment
Watering wand for use with hose
Hand tools

Plants
We hope to have three tables in the greenhouse, each with a different kind of plant, namely, 1) natives, 2) vegetables and herbs and 3) annuals. The natives will be replanted on the slopes of the bowl and around the greenhouse, the annuals will be replanted in the park flower beds and the the vegetables and herbs will be given away to volunteers on Park Days. We will receive annuals and natives from High Park Greenhouses in mid-April. We have yet to meet with Solomon Boye of Toronto Community Gardens, but we hope to receive vegetables and herbs from him. Monique, Karin and Barbara are coordinating vegetables and herbs, Kathy is coordinating annuals and Anna and Martin are coordinating natives.

Table Construction
Currently, we have two tables in the greenhouse and materials for a third. Hopefully, a few volunteers can work with Shawn to build the third table. We can discuss this at the March 18th meeting or e-mail me beforehand if you have time to work on it prior to our next meeting.

Perimeter Garden Design with a Focus on Native Plants
To help deter graffiti and to cloak the greenhouse in plants, we hope to plant a perimeter garden around the greenhouse. Below is a description of the proposed design:

3'-0" WIDE ZONE AROUND GREENHOUSE PERIMETER
Surrounding the greenhouse perimeter, we propose a 3'-0" wide zone consisting of annuals, perennials and grasses as their roots are unlikely to damage the foundation. Included in this 3'-0" wide zone could be castor bean, cleome, and sunflowers in an effort to deter graffiti. Other species might include smooth aster, skyblue aster, new england aster, indian grass, milkweed, monarda fistulosa, geom triflorum, potentilla fruiticosa and prairie dropseed.

NORTH OF THE CONCRETE BLOCK RETAINING WALL
North of the concrete block retaining wall and within a zone that measures from 3'-0" to 6'-0" of the greenhouse perimeter, we propose larger shrubs as the roots will be too far away from the foundation to damage it. These shrubs might include wild red raspberry, flowering raspberry, red osier, service berries, beaked hazel and wild black current. The raspberries, in particular, are meant to deter graffiti.

ALONG THE TRELLIS
Along the trellis to the south, we propose climbing bittersweet vine and climbing nasturium.

Park Day Activities
We have a tentative date for Spring Park Day of Sunday, May 4th. If anyone has any suggestions for Park Day activities, please e-mail This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..
